Washington State is embarking on a pilot of LinguaFolio Online -- a tool for student self-assessment and goal-setting. This tool can be used for any language (and multiple languages), at any level, learned in any setting. It is based on the paper version of LinguaFolio(R), developed by the National Council of State Supervisors for Language (, which modeled LinguaFolio(R) on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

LinguaFolio(R) (and LinguaFolio Online) uses the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines scale as the basis for describing proficiency levels (from Novice Low, Mid, High to Intermediate Low, Mid, High, Advanced Low, Mid, High, and Superior) across communications modes: Interpersonal (Speaking/Listening), Interpretive (Listening, Reading), Presentational (Writing, Speaking). This means that proficiency ratings can be aligned to national assessments, such as the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPT), as well as the Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP) test.

LinguaFolio Online was developed at the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon. The World Languages Program at the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has become a national sponsor of LinguaFolio Online, and as part of our sponsorship, we will have access to about 4000 student accounts for our LinguaFolio Online Washington Pilot.

To launch the pilot, we have developed a Professional Learning Community (PLC) of language teachers who will be trying out LinguaFolio Online themselves. We feel that teachers will be most successful in supporting their students in self-assessment and goal-setting if they have personal experience using the tool.

In addition, we are prioritizing teachers who have completed one or more trainings in LinguaFolio and/or LinguaFolio Online since it is important to understand what LinguaFolio is (and isn't) before you introduce it to your classes.

Finally, OSPI is committed to making the LinguaFolio Online accounts available broadly across the state and across languages and grade levels. If you are interested in participating the LinguaFolio Online Washington Pilot, please complete the form below. We will be back in touch with more information about accessing your LFO account in the near future.
