10 Million Kids Outdoors - Annual Reporting Form

The National Recreation and Park Association and the National Wildlife Federation have partnered to connect 10 million kids with nature by 2015. Local parks and recreation play a critical role in providing the connection between children and the outdoors - and we are thrilled you are participating in this initiative.

NRPA is collecting data on how many children are connecting to nature through programs, events, and self-guided activities in parks. Organizations participating in the 10 Million Kids Outdoors initiative are asked to complete this report using best estimates about kids' participation in nature-based programming, events, or activities.

The date range for this report is October 1, 2012 to October 1, 2013. DO NOT include time spent in organized sports activities such as league play or practice. DO include time spent on hikes, in nature programs, for environmental education activities, at special events, in self-guided or parent-led activities, and in any other type of activity that led to time spent outdoors learning about or experiencing nature.

Kid-in-Nature Hours
Please estimate the number of "kid-in-nature" hours your organization produced. To determine this, identify all activities resulting in kids spending nature-based time outdoors between these dates. Calculate the number by multiplying the total number of kids participating by the number of hours spent outdoors.

EXAMPLE: 40 kids in a week-long day camp averaging four hours per day outdoors would calculate as 800 kid-in-nature hours (40 kids x 4 hours x 5 days).

Kids Outdoors
Please estimate the number of children who spent at least 90 minutes outdoors in nature-based progams. To determine this, identify all activities resulting in kids spending at least 90 minutes of nature-based time outdoors between these dates and determine the number of children participating in these activities.

EXAMPLE: 25 kids in a week-long afterschool program spending 20 minutes per day outdoors learning about nature would calculate as 25 kids outdoors. Additionally, 15 kids taking a half-day Saturday nature hike with an interpretive ranger would calculate as 15 kids outdoors. Combined, this would equal 40 kids outdoors.
