Starting February 2nd, SurveyGizmo is launching a new set of user management features. Learn more about them here!

Psst! If you have a SurveyGizmo account with multiple users, you’ll notice something different in the next few days: we’ve completely revamped the SurveyGizmo user management system.

Behind the scenes, our new user management system works very similarly to the old system – but on the front-end, we’ve added new features and completely revamped the user interface to give you much more control and make it easier to manage teams of users than ever before. Here’s a run-down of some of the changes:

Users, Teams & Roles

Under our new system, you have access to the same number of users and teams as you had previously. However, you’ll notice a few big changes when managing users:

Roles

The biggest change you’ll notice is a new feature: Roles. Roles are a specified set of user permissions that allow you to quickly give the correct level of access to a user. Want to allow someone to run survey reports, but not to create and launch surveys? Set their role to “Reporter” and you’re done. Want to limit someone’s role to testing surveys? It’s already built-in.

In addition to managing the default roles, you can also create as many custom roles as you need to meet your needs, and apply them to people across your organization.

We think roles will make it much easier to manage user access throughout your organization.

Learn more about managing Teams & Roles »

Team Managers

In addition to the global Account Adminstrator, we’ve also created a Team Manager position.

The Team Manager can access all surveys their team is working on, as well as manage user permissions for their team. This should make the Account Admin’s job a little easier, as they won’t be the only person who can give users additional access when needed.

Learn more about Survey Team Managers »

Users can be on Multiple Teams

Users can now be placed on more than one team! This means that someone with a cross-team role in the “real world” can easily access surveys for all the teams they work with.

Learn more about our new User Permissions features »

Other Team Management Changes

We’ve also made some tweaks to the interface to make it easier to manage your users:

Avatar Support – Users can now select avatars to represent them in the app. If your users wish to have custom avatars, they can associate a Gravatar account with their SurveyGizmo profile.

Screen Names – You can assign screen names to users to help you keep better track of them.

Team Names – Go ahead. Name your team anything you want. We’re cool with that.

Team Colors – Administrators can assign teams different colors, which will apply globally to help you more easily know what team a user or survey belongs to on first glance.

Learn more about the User Management interface changes »

So when will this happen?

To see these new changes, all you have to do is login to your SurveyGizmo account. The new user management features will exist in all multi-user accounts beginning the morning of February 2nd, 2012.

The new user management system includes changes often requested by our users, so we’re excited to hear what you think! We think it’ll make it considerably easier to manage users in both small and large-scale organizations.

We've upgraded our File Library with a cleaner interface and bulk upload/bulk delete features. Check out the changes!

Hey, SurveyGizmo users! Notice anything different about our survey software? If you work with images in your surveys, you probably have: we’ve completely revamped our File Library feature!

The SurveyGizmo File Library lets you save files in SurveyGizmo to reuse them in multiple online surveys. You can upload most file types – including logos to use in your survey designs, PDF’s for respondents to download, or any number of other media files.

The new SurveyGizmo File Library was built to make using files and images in your surveys much easier. While the engine under the hood remains the same, we’ve made some big user interface improvements to help you manage the files in your library more effectively.

Here are a few of the changes:

New View

Rather than a long, paginated list of files, we now allow you to see and manage all your files from one page. You can select how many files you want to view at once using the new slider bar at the bottom of the page (which appears automatically when you have more than 2 pages of files in your library).

Each file in your library now shows you an icon (or a thumbnail, if it’s an image file), the title of the file, and its size. Clicking on the file allows you to edit its attributes.

We made this change to allow you to get a better “bird’s eye view” of all the images and files existing in your account. From the File Manager, it’s now a lot easier to edit and manage files – mainly because it’s much easier to find the files you need.

Hover to Distribute Files

You can now also hover over each thumbnail and see:

1) A source URL for the file, and

2) An embed code that allows you to drop the file into any website. This is great for copying and pasting an image into a survey theme you’re designing, or even embedding it in your own website.

Mass Upload Files

It’s also now substantially easier to upload files in bulk, then add them to your online surveys. When you click the ‘Upload Files‘ button, simply hold down ‘Ctrl‘ (on your PC) or ‘Cmd‘ (on your Mac) and select as many files as you wish to upload from your computer. You’ll be asked to add a name and caption to each one, then confirm, and they’ll all upload at once.

Mass Delete Files

Additionally, you can now easily bulk delete files from your file library.

From the File Library window, simply select each file you wish to delete with a checkbox, then click the ‘Delete Files‘ button in the bottom right, and you’re done.

If you haven’t checked out the new file library yet, login to your account and give it a try! You can also take a look at our File Library Tutorial for more in-depth information about the changes.

If you’ve browsed around our site recently, you may have noticed a few changes. One big one is the addition of our new Survey Guides section, which offers several survey examples for you to look through. If you take a look, you’ll see a number of different ways to use SurveyGizmo you may have never thought of before.

We’ve also updated our library of survey templates! Unlike survey themes, a survey template is a set of pre-built survey questions that center around one particular survey topic. All SurveyGizmo users have access to our library of templates – when you create a new survey, just select “Use a pre-built template” from the New Project screen, and you’re ready to go. You can then customize the template to your heart’s content. (If you’d like more info, you can read our tutorial on how to create a survey from a survey template).

Additionally, you can now preview most of our templates from the website without having to log into your account. Just head to our Survey Guides section and browse through the survey examples. A few popular survey templates include:

IT Satisfaction Survey Template

Employee Survey Template

Customer Satisfaction Survey Template

Web Form Template

…& more.

Our Survey Guides section offers access to all the templates we carry (which currently stands at more than 75!) – and more are being added each day. Keep checking back to see what new templates we add in the coming weeks!

Hey, folks!

Earlier this year, SurveyGizmo announced that we were moving to a platform model – opening up development of survey add-ons to third party developers. And today we’re pleased to announce: it’s here!

Let’s face it – it can be tough to keep surveys exciting. And with a huge selection of surveys out in the wild right now, combatting survey fatigue is becoming even more important than ever. Because of that, many of you have been looking for new ways to make your surveys more interactive and engaging – with our new Marketplace, we aim to help you do that and more.

Marketplace allows you to add enhanced question types, themes, templates, and more to your SurveyGizmo account – all from within your SurveyGizmo dashboard.

Here are some of the new survey features you’ll find inside:

Question Types

Marketplace opens with a ton of new survey question types you can use to spice up your surveys. From slider questions to embeddable survey maps and video questions, you can now easily customize your online surveys and make them more interactive.

Account Features

Want to add users or new survey themes to your SurveyGizmo account? Looking for a survey template to get you started building a masterpiece? The Marketplace isn’t just about question types – we’ve made room for add-ons of all shapes and sizes, including these sorts of global account features as well.

Other Survey Features

The Marketplace items aren’t limited to simple question types – there are endless possibilities as to what developers can create using our survey engine.

One key example is our new Opinion Tracker survey add-on, which allows your audience to interact with your website and share their opinions. It’s a pretty robust piece of software that includes commenting modules, both 5-Star and Thumbs-Up/Thumbs-Down Rating systems, and powerful reporting to sort through the results. With this software (which is built on top of SurveyGizmo survey software), you can solicit feedback on the content of any (or all) of your web pages.

We’ve already seen our customers gain some serious actionable data from Opinion Tracker – in particular, sites with a lot of pages (such as blogs and ecommerce sites) have used this add-on to gain valuable feedback on individual product pages or posts.

Like all of our Marketplace add-ons, installing Opinion Tracker is easy – just login to the Marketplace, purchase the item, and embed the code in your website.

We hope that opening up our platform and encouraging developers to use our survey API will increase the depth and breadth of question types and features available to our users. As we continue to expand and update the core functionality of SurveyGizmo, we look forward to Marketplace becoming the place you go to find custom add-ons that perfectly suit your unique needs.

To check it out, just login to your SurveyGizmo account today and look for the Marketplace tab.

Happy shopping!

**And if you’re interested in developing for us, that’s great! Here are the instructions for how to become a SurveyGizmo Marketplace developer. If you don’t know much about our survey API, you can head over to Developer’s Corner and read up on it – we’ll look forward to seeing what you create in the Marketplace soon!</em

Last week we told you about our new Kiosk Survey mode, which offers a new way to collect data and get feedback at live events. It addressed a request we’ve heard more and more recently from our customers: they’ve wanted to offer iPad and laptop surveys at conferences, trade shows, and more.

We’ve also heard repeated requests for something else you want: improved collaboration tools. And that’s why we’re pleased to introduce an important new feature we’ve just added: Editor Notes.

In the past, your best bet for getting feedback on a survey was resorting to the tried-and-true “email flood” technique. You know what that is, right? It’s the one where you send out a survey test link to the rest of your colleagues, then wait for a few minutes until your inbox is flooded with suggestions about things that don’t work or don’t look right in the survey.

You might have also experienced the popular “passive-aggressive co-worker” scenario, where one of your colleagues goes into the survey and makes changes on their own. (And doesn’t let anyone know about it, naturally.) If you’ve experienced this particular situation, you know that it’s not very fun to login to a survey you’ve spent lots of time building, only to find that a question changed by a co-worker has messed up all your logic.

At SurveyGizmo, we’re not a fan of either of the above scenarios. And we want to make it easier for you to collaborate with your teams to create amazing surveys. Which is why we’ve launched Editor Notes!

Editor Notes are quick notes that you can add to your in-design survey. If you have a multi-user account, you can have discussions about your survey’s elements with other account users. The back-and-forth can go on as long as you want it to.

If you have a single-user account, Editor Notes still work for you! You can use them to create notes to yourself about different elements, or annotate your surveys for future reference.

Additionally, if you contact our awesome Support team with a question about a specific survey question, we can now leave you Notes in your survey about your issue. (Sometimes it’s easier to see the solution right inside your survey, rather than having to go back and forth from a support ticket.)

The collaboration possibilities are endless.

We’ve made Editor Notes really easy to use. To create an Editor Note, just click on the Add Note link at the top right of any element in the survey editor. If notes have already been added to a survey element, you’ll see a running tally in place of the Add Note link.

Editor Notes are active in your account now – go give them a try!

As many of you know, we’re always looking for ways to extend the capabilities of our survey software. We’ll often just build it ourselves – but sometimes, there’s functionality that’s outside our realm of expertise. In those cases, we partner and build survey integrations with some of the most innovative companies we can find that offer valuable services for our users. Additionally, our RESTful survey API makes it easy for developers across the world to integrate our survey data into their software.

That being said…we’ve got new survey integrations to tell you about!

First off, there’s our new GoDaddy integration. If you need a private branded domain for your survey, you can now easily register it right from the SurveyGizmo dashboard. It’s simple to get to:

 1. From the Publish tab, click on “Default Link” under the My Links and Campaigns menu.

 2. Under “Sub-Type,” click on either “Branded Subdomain” or Private Domain.”

 3. Click on “Account Settings.

 4. Under “Private Domain,” follow the instructions to set up a GoDaddy domain from within the menu.

Once your domain is set up, we’ll incorporate it into your online survey automatically. No more messing with CNAME’s or DNS – it’s all taken care of. For those of you with Enterprise plans, this should make it much easier to whitelabel your surveys and promote your brand using private domains.

Secondly, we’ve integrated with WhatUsersDo. For those of you who don’t know, WhatUsersDo provides on-demand usability testing and user experience research for websites of all shapes and sizes. But websites aren’t the only thing that needs testing – web surveys deserve testing, too (we always recommend testing your survey using our “Send a Test Link” feature). Now, for a small fee, you can get a ton of insight into how independent users view your survey.

Here’s how it works: when publishing a survey, click on the link marked “Send a Test Link.” Normally you would use this feature to send a test survey out to up to 5 different survey respondents whom you specify. Now, however, you’ll notice that there’s another option – simply click on the link to WhatUsersDo, and you can immediately get feedback from random survey respondents around the world.

You can specify different objectives for the users you test, and ask them specific questions as the survey ends. They’ll also provide a video (with audio) of the user moving through the tasks you’ve assigned them, so you can really get the feel for how they’re interacting with your survey, and where they’re confused or running into problems.

Obviously, it’s a great way to step away from your survey and get a feel for how an unbiased user will react. You might learn that a page is too overwhelming, for instance, and decide to go back and break it up into smaller, more digestible pieces.

Both of these new integrations are just a few of the integrations we offer with our partners – from email to CRM, you can find a ton of resources to enhance and extend your surveys.

Happy surveying!

Yes, you heard that correctly, we just redid and revamped our SurveyGizmo Apple Dashboard Widget.

What does this mean for you?

The Survey Widget is now faster and sleeker, so you’ll be able to keep track of your survey response counts instantly when you’re in front of your computer (as long as you have an internet connection, of course).

The widget lets you view how all your surveys are doing throughout the day. With an easy to use drop-down menu to switch from survey to survey, you can keep track of response counts, completed surveys, partially completed surveys, and the number of disqualified respondents.

To install the widget, just head over to our Survey Widget page and click on the install file.

We know you love having as much information as possible at your fingertips, and we hope that these new improvements to the Survey Widget for Apple Dashboard will help bring it to you even faster.

As always, we love hearing from our users about how they’re using our product, so if you’ve used the widget in the past and are upgrading to the new widget now, or if you’re just trying the new widget for the first time, we would love to hear about in the comments!

Hey, folks! Got some more projects coming out of the SurveyGizmo Developer’s Lab (a quick explanation for those of you who don’t remember – Dev Lab is two weeks during the summer where we tell our developers, “Go forth into the world and create something glorious for SurveyGizmo. It can be anything you want – just as long as it’s useful and magnificent. Do not fail us.”

And if you’ve been reading up on some of the Dev Lab projects we’ve spotlighted so far, you can see that they’ve risen to the challenge.

Today we’re going to focus on a couple more exciting new question types developed by our staff.

Mobile Question Types

Remember Matt Null, whose geolocation survey questions we told you about earlier? He’s got another project he’s working on, too: Matt decided to take some of our most popular custom question types and optimize them for mobile devices.

Now, keep in mind that we offer Mobile Survey Themes that detect and display a mobile-optimized theme for mobile users…but sometimes you don’t need to go to that length. Sometimes it’s all about just replacing one or two of your custom question types with a new one that’s better-suited for mobile devices.

And that’s what Matt’s going after. So far, he’s created mobile-optimized versions of two survey question types – the slider question type and a toggle question – that are optimized to run more smoothly for mobile users.

And this is just the beginning. He’s planning a suite of mobile question types, so your mobile users can have access to all the question types that work really well on desktops, but not as smoothly on mobile devices.

Signature Box

Meanwhile, Seth McClaine has been hard at work on his own project: a signature box survey question.

Using Seth’s question type, you’ll be able to request signature confirmation from your survey respondents. It works using HTML5 to capture mouse movements, so anyone can use it. Users can also draw lines, shapes, etc, depending on what you require in your survey. All they need is a mouse (they can also use a pen tablet, or even a mobile device like a phone or an iPad).

We think the signature box will have a wide range of uses, particularly for things like job applications and legal forms (Seth originally got the idea when he was signing a lease on a house – why not put it online and save a stack of paper?). And given that it works so well with mobile devices, it will be an ideal solution for in-person surveys and market research using an iPad or other tablet. We’re looking forward to seeing what you all do with it!

Both of these new question types will be available in the near future – we’ll keep you posted!

The SurveyGizmo Developer’s Lab continues to roll on…(for those of you who don’t remember, Dev Lab is two weeks during the summer where we turn our developers loose to work on new features and improvements that they feel passionate about. Anything they’re interested in is fair game. Dev Lab gives our devs the opportunity to step outside of their normal roles and create some awesome new survey tools).

Last week we told you about Matt’s Google Maps survey tools, which allow you to embed maps and geolocation-related survey questions and reporting into your surveys. Today, let’s talk about video.

Not one, but two of our developers are working on video-related survey tools during Dev Week 2011. Ranging from video embeds to webcam support, we’re about to have a ton that you can do with video and images.

Webcam Capture

Ryan Hadley, a SurveyGizmo SysAdmin, is working on a video capture survey question type. Using the webcam of your survey-taker’s computer, it allows you to capture still images of people responding to your survey.

The video capture tool works using Flash, since HTML5 does not yet have the ability to call and pull data from a remote webcam. It’s got a simple, easy-to-use interface that allows respondents to see the picture they’ve just taken before submitting it.

We see a lot of interesting (& fun!) uses for this tool – one obvious use is identity verification of the person taking the survey. For job application surveys or similar survey types, it will allow you to attach a face to a name. Or how about a customer service survey – “Show us the face you made after your support call!”

Youtube Video Surveys

Meanwhile, Anthony Hildoer, one of our Sr. PHP Developers, is working on a tool that lets you embed Youtube videos in your surveys.

Except it’s a little bit more than that.

In addition to simply embedding a video, Anthony has made this question type into an interactive experience. You can set start and end parameters, and get feedback on a video clip, in a few different forms:

Click the spots on the video that stand out

Add comments to different sections of the video

Thumbs up/thumbs down responses at different times

…and more.

Reporting actually winds up being the real challenge with this survey question type, because there’s a ton of data to combine and analyze. The reporting Anthony’s working on will allow users to analyze survey-taker’s feedback based on time, image, and more. If you add a video question to your survey, you’ll be able to tell which points in the video are the most well-received, which are dull, and even get feedback in your survey-takers’ own words regarding the points when they clicked.

Obviously, this question type will allow you to do a huge amount with video in your surveys, ranging from simply displaying a disclaimer video to requesting specific feedback on a video clip.

Awesome! So When Will They Be Released?

We’re looking forward to having these out in the near future. Stay tuned to the SurveyGizmo website and blog for more details.

Last week we introduced our 5-Pack of Custom Survey Questions – a new summer promo that extends the functionality of SurveyGizmo using add-on question types.

Today we want to dig in a little more with one of our most popular new custom question types: the slider survey question.

What is a Slider Survey Question?

Slider survey question types are usually used for questions whose answers are on a scale (such as, “On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate SurveyGizmo’s Survey Tools?” or “How much do you agree with the following statement?”). They offer a different, more usable take on the traditional range question type (in fact, there’s one key difference between a slider question type and a range question type: the slider has an indicated starting point. Users can either choose to keep the initial starting point, or drag the slider to agree with their preferences).

By offering the ability to slide a bar on a visual line, researchers can improve the usability of their surveys, and also receive much more nuanced responses from survey takers.

What do you use them for?

You can use slider survey questions for any number of purposes. Here are a few example survey questions:

How often do you bike to work?

What percent of your income do you give to charity?

How much do you agree with the following statement?

Where do you fall on the U.S. political spectrum (left, right, in-between)?

As you can see, any time you’re looking to measure the degree of something, a slider may be the right question type for you.

How do I set them up?

If you already have access to the 5-Pack of Custom Survey Questions, you should find them in your account the next time you create a survey.

When setting up your slider questions, there are a number of different options – you can add different units, labels, and even tell the system where you want the slider to start.

What else can I do with sliders?

Our slider survey question type is extremely flexible, giving you the ability to customize it like crazy.

You can use CSS to change the graphics on the slider, doing things like:

Changing the color of the slider

Adding a gradient to the overall slider feel

Changing the slider “handle” from a bar to an image

Need more customization? Our Professional Services team can help you get even more out of slider questions, providing customizations like:

Vertical sliders

Adding unique units to your sliders (instead of numeric values)

Multiple sliders that sum up to 100 automatically (for percentage-based questions)

Let our Pro Services Team know what you’re looking for, and we can make it happen.
