Ranking questions provide the order of preference of select items from the survey respondent. Manipulating the Ranking questions is easy using the arrows to the right of each option, but there are a few considerations that are important to note about the behaviour of Ranking questions:

If no options are changed/moved, the question is considered unanswered and no answer is recorded in the response.

If the question is required and no options are changed/moved, the respondent will be blocked from continuing to the next page or submitting the survey.

When navigating back to a page that includes a Ranking question, the respondents ranking order will be maintained unless the ranking options were created by Option Piping. In the case of Option Piped Ranking questions, the original order will be displayed.

A great trick to ensure that a Ranking question is answered and the options are changed/moved, is to set the question as required and to randomize the options (paid accounts only), so that if the respondent is presented with their preferred order and they click ‘Next Page’, the page is reloaded with an error and the options are randomized, which will cue the respondent to adjust the order back to their preferred ranking.
