Show or Hide a Question

What is this?

We have two features that allow you to show or hide questions based on the answers to a previous question: Show/When and Show/Hide.

Show/Hide allows you to show or hide a question based on the answers to a previous question on the same page. This means you can hide certain questions that may not pertain to other ones until a specific answer option is chosen.

Show/When triggers allow you to do the exact same thing, except they allow you to show or hide a question based on the answers to questions on a previous page.

When would I use this?

Show/Hide Triggers

A great time to use a show/hide trigger would be if you have a multiple-choice checkbox question such as “What is your profession?”. Later on that page, you may have further questions that dig specifically into each profession.

The show/hide trigger allows you to show different questions for each profession chosen. Let’s say one of your options is “Doctor”, you could then have a follow-up question “How many years have you practiced Medicine?” show if “Doctor” is chosen.

Show/When Triggers

Our Show/When feature is very similar, and is usually used when you have more than just a few questions you’d like to show based on a previous question. Let’s say you have 20 questions that span over several pages you’d like to ask based on a previous question. You can do so using show/when so that the question or the entire page doesn’t show unless the criteria you’ve set has been met.

This is great for healthcare professionals who may have multiple patients coming into one survey with multiple conditions. Near the beginning of the survey, they can allow the patients to choose which condition they have, and then they’ll get an ENTIRELY new questionnaire based on the selection they choose. Show/when can make it so they only see the pages that pertain to their condition.

Show/Hide is great for if you have a questionnaire that is mostly the same questions for everyone, but just a few that need to clarify more. Show/when can help you show what seems to be entirely different surveys to different people that come in through the same link.

What question types have the ability to use Show/Hide Triggers?

  • Radio Button
  • Checkbox
  • Dropdown Menu
  • Likert Scale
  • Table of Radio Buttons
  • Table of Checkboxes

What question types have the ability to use Show/When triggers?

All question types (except for Marketplace custom questions) and pages have the ability to use show/when triggers! You can show or hide any question or any page whenever you’d like!

What should I avoid?

Generally, you want to avoid using conflicting logic. If you’ve got show/when on several pages, you probably don’t want to use page logic as well because the system will try to do everything you’re asking for, and may get confused because the logic conflicts.
