In all likelihood, you have used a Likert scale (or something you’ve called a Likert scale) in a survey before. It might surprise you to learn that Likert scales are a very specific format and what you have been calling Likert may not be. Not to worry — researchers that have been doing surveys for… Read More »
Slider Questions
What is it?
The Slider question type is a custom question that allows you to ask for answers based on a range. In general, the answers are on a scale (such as, “On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate SurveyGizmo’s Survey Tools?” or “How much do you agree with the following statement?”).
As it is a custom question type, it does not come with our regular subscriptions, but is available for purchase on the SurveyGizmo Marketplace. You can purchase this additional question type at any time, and you can cancel your subscription to it whenever you’d like!
Do you have a mobile version?
Yes we do! The Mobile Slider question allows the respondent to move a slider along a spectrum to select their answer. You can choose which measurement increments you use, and is specifically designed for use on a mobile device where your respondents can use the touch the screen to move a selector along the slider spectrum.
If you distribute the survey to respondents on a computer as well, they can use a mouse to answer the question. This question will work with most web-accessible mobile devices and computer Internet Browsers.
When would I use it?
By offering the ability to slide a bar on a visual line, researchers can improve the usability of their surveys, and also receive much more nuanced responses from survey takers. The regular slider question is a great option for this.
The mobile slider is best used when you’re distributing your survey on a mobile device, and when you’re looking for a response on a range (1-10, etc). A great time to use this would be if you want to ask your respondent to rate their satisfaction with the customer service they received at their last visit (on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most satisfied)
What questions would you ask?
You can use slider survey questions for any number of purposes. Here are a few example survey questions:
- How often do you bike to work?
- What percent of your income do you give to charity?
- How much do you agree with the following statement?
- Where do you fall on the U.S. political spectrum (left, right, in-between)?
As you can see, any time you’re looking to measure the degree of something, a slider may be the right question type for you.
Can I see an example of the two slider types?
