Capturing URL variable in Hidden Values Tutorials

Available to All Account Levels.

If you're looking to capture a URL variable with a hidden value action, you can do so by completing the following steps:

1. On Page 1 of your survey, click "Add Action".

---> Once inside, select "Hidden Value" and name your Action.

2. After hitting save-->

---> You're going to want to click on "Insert Merge Code".

3. This will bring up a drop down menu, and you'll want to select URL Variable from the list. Here's a screenshot of what you'll see:

---> It will populate the following merge code in blue below the Value field: [url("xxx")]

---> Click on this blue link, and it will populate into the value field.

4. Replace xxx with whatever your URL variable is.

---> Ex. If your link looks like this: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/yoursurveynamehere?firstname=julius

------->You'll want to fill in "firstname" into the merge code as such: [url("firstname")].

**PLEASE NOTE** You cannot use an underscore "_" in these URL Variables as they will not capture data properly.

5. Save your work.

6. (optional). If you have multiple URL variables you're trying to pass through the URL query string, you'll need to create a hidden value action for every URL variable you'd like to add.

--->Example: If your link looks like this:

http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/yoursurveynamehere?firstname=julius&lastname=caeser&age=32

------>**Please Note** If you do not yet have a ? in your link, you can use ? before the first URL variable, any additional will need to be preceded by an &.

You'll need to complete three hidden value actions that have one of each of the values below in the value section:

[url("firstname")]

[url("lastname")]

[url("age")]

It will look something like this on your Create & Edit tab:

**Note: Hidden values are hidden from the survey respondent so you will not see them show up when taking the survey. However, you can pipe from them, and you can filter by them in your reports and exports.
