Creating a CSV File for Uploads Tutorial

In order to upload a list of contacts for an email invitation, or upload a list of passwords and prepopulation data for the Survey Login action, you need to export your spreadsheet to a CSV format, the shorthand for the Comma Separated Values file type. Below are the steps to do this simple procedure in:

All of the examples below are using a simple spreadsheet as an example. In this case, an example of contacts for an email invitation:

Microsoft Office 2007 – Excel (Windows)

Once you have opened or created your spreadsheet, click on the Office button in the very top left, move your mouse over Save As and a new window appears to the right; click on Other Formats:

In the new Save As window that appears, at the bottom you will want to open the drop-down menu titled Save as type and scroll down through the list till you find and select CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv):

You can now change the File name or the location you will save the file. When everything is set, click Save in the bottom right:

Finally, you will receive a warning about features not being compatible. Simply click on Yes to finish saving your file:

You’re now ready to upload your new .csv to SurveyGizmo!

Microsoft Office 2010 – Excel (Windows)

Once you have opened or created your spreadsheet, click on the green File button in the very top left and click on Save As:

In the new Save As window that appears, at the bottom you will want to open the drop-down menu titled Save as type and scroll down through the list till you find and select CSV (MS-DOS) (*.csv):

You can now change the File name or the location you will save the file. When everything is set, click Save in the bottom right:

You will receive a warning about your workbook containing multiple sheets. Simply click on OK to continue:

Finally, you will receive a warning about features not being compatible. Simply click on Yes to finish saving your file:

You’re now ready to upload your new .csv to SurveyGizmo!

Microsoft Office 2008 – Excel (Mac)

Once you have opened or created your spreadsheet, select File > Save As… from the Menu Bar:

In the new window that appears, select the drop-down menu labeled Format and select Comma Separated Values (.csv) from the list:

You can now change the file name (under Save As) or the location Where you will save the file. When everything is set, click Save in the bottom right:

You’re now ready to upload your new .csv to SurveyGizmo!

iWork ’09 – Numbers (Mac)

Once you have opened or created your spreadsheet, select File > Export… from the Menu Bar:

At the top of the new window that appears, select the CSV box at the very top. Next, select the Text Encoding drop-down menu and choose Unicode (UTF-8) :

Click Next… to bring up the final window where you can change the name of the file (Save As) and the location Where to save the file. Click Export when you’re ready:

You’re now ready to upload your new .csv to SurveyGizmo!

NeoOffice 3.x.x – Calc (Mac)

Once you have opened or created your spreadsheet, select File > Save As… from the Menu Bar:

You may want to change the name of your spreadsheet and Where to save the file. The next step is choosing the proper file type from the drop-down. You want to select Text CSV (.csv):

Finally, make sure you check the Edit filter settings option:

Click Save. You may be prompted with an additional screen (move to the next section if you did not get this screen):

If you have the above screen, click Keep Current Format to proceed. Finally, you will reach the Export of Text Files window. Ensure that:

  • Character set is Unicode (UTF-8)
  • Field delimiter is , (comma)
  • Text delimiter is (double quotation mark)

If everything is set, click OK to finish saving the file. You’re ready to upload your new .csv to SurveyGizmo!

OpenOffice 3.x.x – Calc (Windows/Mac/Linux)

Once you have opened or created your spreadsheet, select File > Save As… from the Menu Bar:

You may want to change the name of your spreadsheet and Where to save the file. The next step is choosing the proper file type from the drop-down. You want to select Text CSV (.csv):

Google Docs – Spreadsheet (Online Only)

Once you have opened or created your spreadsheet, select File > Download as > CSV (current sheet) from the Menu Bar:
