How does NPS work?

Net Promoter Score is calculated on a scale from -100 to 100 by asking an individual how likely they are to recommend your business to their family and friends on scale from 0 to 10. The individual scores are then bucketed as:

NPS Scale
  • Detractors (0-6): unhappy customers who may spread negative word-of-mouth.
  • Passives (7-8): not particularly unhappy, but may be susceptible to advances from competitors.
  • Promoters (9-10): loyal customers who not only continue to purchase, but advocate for others to buy as well.

Once you have your scores, you simply subtract the percentage of detractors from the percentage of promoters. That number becomes your NPS score! If you’re not happy with your score, time to look at where you are falling short of expectations. If you are happy, you can look closer to see where you can take parts of your customer experience from great to extraordinary!
