Acceptance of non-abstinence survey 2015 - ICRC

Information about the study

What is this study about and why was I contacted?
• We are researchers at Bowling Green State University who are interested in the views of individuals who work in addiction treatment regarding outcome goals for those who have a co-occurring substance use disorder and a mental health disorder (e.g., Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Social Phobia).

• You are being invited to participate because you are a credentialed addiction professional. Because we wanted to include as many credentialed addiction professionals as possible, the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium coordinated the dissemination of this survey through state licensure and credentialing boards.

• At the conclusion of the survey, there are several questions about you and your work setting, such as the types of clients you have worked with and the types of services you have provided.

• It will take only 15 minutes to complete this survey – your time is valuable and so we have kept the questionnaire as short as possible to make it easier for you to complete the survey.

Why should I participate and how will you protect my privacy?
• The benefits of participating include helping us study attitudes regarding treatment outcome goals for clients with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. We hope to publish an article summarizing the overall results of this study, but no one person's answers will be presented -- only a summary of data across many participants.

• You will never be asked for your name or other unique identifying information, and your responses to the survey will be completely anonymous. No one will ever know that you participated in this study unless you tell them. All data will be kept in a password-protected computer, and only the primary investigator (Alan Davis, M.A.) and his faculty mentor (Harold Rosenberg, Ph.D.) will have access to the data.

• To further protect your privacy, you may want to clear your internet browser and page history.

• Although we cannot afford to pay every person who might participate in our survey, we do want to acknowledge your assistance – therefore, as a way to say “thank you” and to pay it forward – we will donate $2.00/person (up to $150.00) to the American Psychological Association Foundation (which provides support for innovative research and programs for students and early career psychologists).

• Deciding to participate or not will have no impact on any relationship you may have with BGSU.

Are there any risks to participating in this study?
• There are no obvious physical or psychological risks associated with participating in a survey of one's views regarding treatment practices. Furthermore, please note that you are free to decide NOT to participate; that you are free to change your mind and stop participating at any time even if you begin the survey; and that you are free to skip any questions you don't want to answer.

How can I find out about the results from the study?
• If you would like us to send you a copy of the report summarizing the results of this study, we would be happy to do so. To keep your survey completely anonymous, and still request a summary of the results, please send a SEPARATE email to alan.kooi.davis@gmail.com with the email address to which you want the summary to be emailed.
