Preceding research indicates digit ratio (the ratio of the length of the index finger and length of the ring finger – on the left and right hand) to be an indicator of pre-natal hormone exposure; in particular, testosterone and oestrogen. It is believed that testosterone can be found to exert its effect on the fourth finger (ring finger) and oestrogen on the second finger (index finger). Both physical and psychological traits have been associated with digit ratio (Manning, Scutt, Wilson & Lewis-Jones 1998).It is possible other traits such as pro- or anti-social behaviour, self-esteem, perceived stress levels, masculinity/femininity and levels of narcissism (preoccupation with personal adequacy) may also be indexed by this digit ratio.This study attempts to establish any relationship between digit ratio and these variables.
