Academic Success Peer Coach Position Description

Program Description

The College of Science and Mathematics Academic Success Peer Coaching program aims to partner with students in making the most of their collegiate experience. We collaborate with students to create and implement individual plans for both academic and personal success. Our hope is to inspire intellectual, professional and social growth so that students may develop skills that will support their success here at Cal Poly and in their future endeavors.

Program Overview

  • Targets freshmen, sophomores, and first year transfer students who are academically struggling.
  • Students will meet with an Academic Success Peer Coach 4 times during winter and spring quarters.
  • Academic Peer Coaches are current, high-achieving, undergraduate juniors and seniors in the College of Science and Mathematics with at least a 3.25 Cal Poly GPA.
  • All new coaches will participate in a minimum of 15 hours of academic coaching and review academic/learning strategies training specific to CSM students, and practice  coaching techniques with each other.
  • Program will take an advising approach rooted in both positive psychology and appreciative inquiry.
  • Framework for academic coaching sessions:
    • Discovery – how you learn, strengths, areas needing improvement;
    • Structure – application of organizational skills, time and priority management skills, academic/learning strategies;
    • Support – goal setting and encouragement;
    • Feedback/Accountability – progress and growth.
  • Topics may include:
    • Help applying specific academic issues (test taking, time management, goal setting, establishing a study plan, motivation, focus and concentration, college reading strategies, note taking, etc.);
    • Assistance in organizing and setting goals for the quarter;
    • Holding students accountable to their academic plans and life goals;
    • Referral to other appropriate campus resources;
    • Exploring academic options and working through undue academic pressure.

Duties

  • Meet 4 times with a caseload of 4 students per quarter
  • Schedule meetings weeks three through nine of the quarter
  • Log reports in PolyLearn
  • Seek advice and consultation when challenging issues arise
  • Refer students to appropriate resources on campus
  • Follow up with caseload via email as necessary throughout the quarter
  • Hold students accountable for attending all meetings

Position Requirements

  • Be enrolled as a full time, undergraduate junior or senior in the College of Science and Mathematics
  • Maintain a 3.25 or higher Cal Poly GPA
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse population; possess the ability to build rapport with these students
  • MUST be available for mandatory trainings beginning Sept 5-13.

Additional Information

The CSM Academic Success Peer Coach position is a stipend-based position. You will receive $300/quarter, with a time commitment of approximately 23-28 hours per quarter.
