 Scholarship Application
About the Scholarship Program:
 
  • The Houston Area Health Information Management Association (HAHIMA) awards scholarships on an annual basis.
  • Annual awards are made in the amounts of $1,000 to a qualified RHIA student and $500 to a qualified RHIT or Cancer Management applicant.

Qualifications Include:

  • Must be enrolled as a second year student in an accredited RHIT or RHIA program or an Associate Degree Cancer Management Program (traditional classroom or on-line)
  • Must reside in counties surrounding the Houston area as follows: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris Matagorda, Wharton.
    Consideration may also be given if you reside in: Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Madison, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Walker, Waller, Washington, Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton, Orange, Polk, Tyler.
  • Must have completed at least nine (9) hours in an HIM program
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in their major coursework

Requirements:
  1. This completed Scholarship Application.
  2. Certified/official copy of applicant's transcript (photocopies not accepted).
  3. Letter of recommendation from non-faculty, HIM professional preferred
  4. Essay (500 word minimum) written on one of the topics below: (Plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification):
    1. Please discuss why you chose the HIM profession. Include what you hope to do through your professional affiliation.
    2. How do you explain to fellow students, and others, the role and responsibilities of a Health Information Management Professional?
    3. What skills do HIM professionals have that translate to other fields? Please discuss non-traditional settings and the role the HIM profession can contribute to non-traditional settings.
    4. There are multiple paths that an HIM professional can choose in traditional healthcare settings. Please discuss your interpretation of traditional HIM. Discuss your preparedness to contribute to HIM in a traditional setting. 
  5. Plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification
  6. WINNERS MUST BE PRESENT AT THE MEETING TO RECEIVE THE AWARD.
