2019 Mawby Award Nomination Form

The Russell G. Mawby Award for Philanthropy 2019

This award honors the work and philosophy of Dr. Russell G. Mawby in encouraging private action for the public good through philanthropy. The award was established in 1995 by the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) and the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) upon the retirement of Dr. Mawby as chairman and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Dr. Mawby was a founder of both CMF and MNA, he served as the chair of both organizations and led the creation of the Michigan Community Service Commission.


Nomination Process and Guidelines

Nominations will be accepted for an individual or couple who have at least five years of grantmaking experience and demonstrate leadership, impact, creativity/advocacy and participation in collaborative efforts. Public officials, staff of foundations and trustees of CMF and MNA are not eligible for nomination.

To nominate an individual or couple please submit:
  • This online form including contact information for two individuals who can serve as references for the nominee. References will be contacted for final candidates only.
  • A brief narrative that describes the nominee's leadership, impact, creativity/advocacy and collaboration. The narrative can be uploaded as a file below or emailed to Sue Cuddington, executive assistant to the president, CMF, at scuddington@michiganfoundations.org. If you email the document, please include the nominator and nominee's names.


Selection and Recognition

Nominations are due May 13, 2019. A volunteer peer panel will review all nominations and select the award winner. This year’s recipient will be honored at CMF's Annual Conference on Monday, October 7 in Traverse City.

Leadership: Describe how the nominee has demonstrated leadership in his/her philanthropic activities.

Impact: Describe three to five ways in which the nominee has made a difference in his/her community, region or the state in strengthening various sectors of the nonprofit sector through grantmaking (financial contributions).

Creativity/Advocacy: Describe the nominee’s support of innovative ideas in the nonprofit and public sectors.

Collaboration: Provide examples of how the nominee works with grantees or other grantmakers to support common goals.
