Streetscape Improvements Project

The Links to Opportunity Streetscape Improvements Project is engaging the community to help redesign the sidewalk and pedestrian areas along MLK Jr Way, Division Ave, and N 1st Street. The Streetscape Improvements Project is part of a City of Tacoma effort that strives to improve social and economic opportunities in communities along the Tacoma Link Light Rail Extension corridor. A streetscape is a design for the area between the curb of the street and the front of neighboring homes and businesses. Streetscape designs often include seating, lighting, landscaping, art, and more.

Check out the design flipbook to preview some of the features proposed for the streetscape design, and please share your feedback with us by completing the questions below.
The City of Tacoma, along with consultants and outreach partners, conducted community outreach to introduce the Streetscape Project and gather initial feedback to help inform work on the preliminary design. Here are some of the key themes we've been hearing from the community so far.

1. SIDEWALK DESIGN

We’ve heard varied responses when we ask about colors for the design: Are there colors for specialty sidewalk that resonate more with you?

2. The sandblasted band tying the different specialty sidewalk and plaques together in the design is meant to represent strong community connectivity. What do you think of the sandblasted band?

3. What area of the corridor should be highlighted with the most specialty sidewalk and plaques?

5. SEATING

Are there any locations on the corridor where you’ve wanted a seat but have not had access to one?
6. Are there elements of public seating that you prefer?

8. DISTRICT MARKERS

What do you think of the district markers proposed in the design? (select all that apply)

9. LANDSCAPING

What do you think are the two most important factors for us to consider when selecting new street trees within the City of Tacoma’s requirements?
10. BIKE PARKING

Are there any locations on the corridor where you’ve wanted a bicycle corral or bicycle rack but have not had access to one?

11. WAYFINDING

Which types of destinations do you think are most important to include on wayfinding signs?

12. Which users should be the primary focus of wayfinding signs?
13. WHAT WE'RE HEARING

Do you think the project team is incorporating community feedback into the preliminary design in a meaningful way?
