Pierce County adopted the Pierce County Rivers Flood Hazard Management Plan in 2013. The plan outlined how Pierce County would address and manage flooding on major rivers, large tributaries and associated floodplains.

The purpose of the Pierce County Rivers Flood Hazard Management Plan is to:
  • recommend regional policies, programs, and projects to reduce risks to public health and safety
  • reduce infrastructure and property damage
  • reduce maintenance costs
  • improve habitat conditions, while protecting and maintaining the regional economy
The flood plan was developed to meet requirements in the Washington Administrative Code (WAC 173-145), Revised Code of Washington (RCW 86.12), and the Community Rating System Guidance for floodplain management planning under the National Flood Insurance Program.

The National Flood Insurance Programs’ Community Rating System (CRS) requires a flood plan update every five years. Currently, Pierce County is a Class 2 community in the CRS program. This rating provides a discount of up to 40 percent on federally backed flood insurance premiums for unincorporated Pierce County properties.
