Real-time Subsea Data Telemetry: Feasibility and Next Steps for the Gulf of Mexico

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: Standing Committee to advise the Gulf Research Program on the Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems Research Campaign

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invites you to nominate experts to serve on a new standing committee to guide the
Gulf Research Program (GRP) in the design, planning, and implementation of a long-term research campaign to improve understanding of the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current and other Gulf ocean systems. This research is part of a larger and longer-term GRP mission to improve understanding of the complex ocean systems that shape the Gulf of Mexico.

The committee will advise the GRP on refining the design and guiding the implementation of funding opportunities for a research campaign based on recommendations outlined in the consensus report Understanding and Predicting the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current: Gaps and Recommendations. The committee will help identify and develop opportunities for collaboration and joint sponsorship of activities and recommend ways to increase interaction among relevant public, private, and academic organizations, including approaches for improved international collaboration in Gulf of Mexico oceanography. The standing committee will review the success of projects supported by the “Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems Grants 1” funding opportunity and assess their collective capacity to promote the goals of the long-term campaign. The committee will specify any modifications to the long-term field campaign based on the most recent advancements in related fields or findings by ongoing projects funded by the GRP and others. This could include alterations of how to phase the suite of activities, estimated costs, advice on organizational framework of the entity (or entities) running the research campaign, and the implementation timeline. We are looking for individuals with expertise in a range of disciplines, including management of large multidisciplinary oceanographic campaigns, observational physical oceanography, data communications and data management, and oceanographic and atmospheric modeling and forecasting. Please note that committee members selected will be required to be free from conflicts-of-interest and will not be eligible to apply for funding opportunities developed from the committee’s work.

The Call for Nominations closes on May 9, 2018.
