You are being invited to take part in the European Commission's “EU Protects” campaign. Before you decide to participate, please take the time to read the following information carefully. If there is anything that is not clear, or if you would like more information please contact

2. Introduction
The “EU Protects” campaign is seeking to promote the people and systems who protect EU citizens through EU funded safety and security mechanisms, aiming at the general public between 35-55 years of age, in all 27 EU countries (excluding the UK). The campaign’s concept is ‘the chain of ordinary heroes’ from all EU countries who every day work together across Europe to protect EU citizens.

3. What personal data do we collect and through which ,technical means?
The following personal data will be collected exclusively for the purpose of the campaign's activities: Name, Surname, Age, Date of birth, Gender, Nationality, Place of residence, Title, Company name, Media publication/organisation name, Phone number, E-mail address, Postal address, IP address, geolocation, Social Media accounts, Photographs, Videos, Voice recordings.

4. Copyright release


4.1.  Your Content
If you provide us with content (your own videos, photos, stories) you confirm that all content is royalty free and can be used without duration or local limit in the online or print publication to promote the EC campaign.
You also confirm that all content is completely model released, meaning that all third parties that created or participated, in any way, to content creation have previously consented to the above use.


4.2.  Our campaign productions
If you decide to take part in this campaign, please be aware that you might be asked to be recorded, filmed and/or photographed and that the sound recordings, photographs and/or films bearing your voice/image may be included in the campaign’s media productions in the form of videos, posters.
By signing this statement you agree to be recorded, photographed and/or filmed, and you authorise the European Commission:

– to use without restriction the sound recordings, photographs and/or films bearing your voice/image in all types of publications, in any form of televisual broadcasting or communication via the Internet;
– to include and archive these sound recordings, photographs and/or films in the European Union’s online databases, accessible to the public free of charge online. Third parties having access to these databases may use the said recordings, photographs and/or films in compliance with the EC's Decision on the re-use of the Commission's documents (2011/833/EU) for information or education purposes only;
in order to illustrate or promote the activities or projects, past, present or future, of the European institutions and the European Union.


In addition, you also agree to have your name published together with the campaign materials. We may also share your first name, last name and organisation with other campaign participants.

5. Privacy Statement
Please note that the “EU Protects” campaign will involve media productions in the form of video or visual stories and that you might be recorded and/or photographed. This material might be used for communication activities, both online and offline, related to the “EU Protects” campaign. We may share your first name, last name and organisation with other campaign participants. An opt-out option is provided to participants who prefer that their images are neither recorded nor published. If you do not agree with the publication of your personal data, please opt out where required, or inform the Data Controller by using the contact information below and explicitly specifying your request.

Your personal data will be processed for the purposes outlined in this privacy statement only.

The provision of your consent would form the legal basis used to process your personal data. You can provide your consent for the use of your personal data in this campaign by selecting the relevant option during the campaign or completing this consent form.

As this will involve the handling of personal data by an EU Institution, it is subject to data protection rules established by Regulation (EC) No 45/2001.  These rules are based on the already existing Community rules on data protection, which apply to all Member States.
The Directorate General for Communication (Directorate A – Strategy and Corporate Communication, unit DG COMM.A1) of the European Commission will act as “Data Controller”, while the contractor KOMMITMENT (a consortium formed by ICF Mostra, 17 Avenue Marnix, 1000 Brussels) will act as “Data Processor” on behalf of the European Commission. KOMMITMENT is bound by a specific contractual clause for any processing operations of personal data on behalf of the Commission, and by the confidentiality obligations in the General Data Protection Regulation, EU 2016/679.

6. What will happen to your personal data?
The Data Controller, Data Processor or their trusted representatives will only use your data in the context of this campaign. During the duration of the campaign, the data will be held by the contractor KOMMITMENT (consortium by ICF Mostra) and the European Commission.

The Data Controller, Data Processor, and trusted representatives will not:
• rent or sell your personal data;
• store or disclose your IP address or geolocation to other parties;
• publish or disclose your data to any party other than to DG COMM and European Commission staff in charge of the organisation of the “EU Together We Protect” campaign, agents of the European Commission, such as members of the European Commission Representatives in Member States, contractors’ staff involved in the organisation of the campaign, and bodies charged with monitoring or inspecting tasks in the application of EU law (e.g. internal audits, Court of Auditors, European Anti-fraud Office – OLAF), as well as other participants in the campaign.


7. How do we safeguard your personal data?
The Data Controller, Data Processor and their representatives or agents will strive to implement commercially reasonable physical, administrative and technical safeguards to help protect the confidentiality, security, and integrity of your personal data and prevent the loss, misuse, unauthorised access, unauthorised interception, or alteration of your information. Your choice to disclose personal data in an email submission or online form is voluntary. Unfortunately, no data transmission over the Internet is 100% secure and we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any such personal data or fully ensure that your private communications and other personal data will not be inadvertently disclosed.


8. How long do we keep your data?
Your data will be kept for a maximum period of twelve months after the “EU Protects” campaign ends (the provisional end date is 31 December 2019, the campaign might be extended).

Data will be automatically deleted at the end of this period.

9. How can you verify, modify or delete your information or exercise data subject rights?

The European Commission has launched a new communication campaign to raise awareness of the ways in which the EU is protecting its citizens from global challenges.

Central to this campaign called "EU Protects" is the pool of so-called "local heroes" who join forces and cooperate beyond national interests when confronted with challenges to do with health, the environment, crime, terrorism, migration and the economy.    

This campaign aims to use human stories to show how the EU participates and is a decisive player in citizens' daily lives.
