Calculating Your Sustainability ROI

I know that for some of you, it can be daunting to attempt to calculate a sustainability ROI, but do the best you can in providing the data below - you will that much closer to making your project a reality!

1. Sustainability Project

Enter a brief description of the project for which you would like to obtain an ROI. *This question is required.

2. Current revenue ($)

This can be found in the annual report if your company is public, or obtained through the finance department if privately owned. If you cannot obtain the data, be sure to include an estimate.

3. Current profit ($)

Depending on the organization, this figure can vary widely, though it is typically between 7% and 14%. Enter an estimate if not known or available. *This question is required.

4. Estimated percent revenue growth from improved reputation with customers, innovative sustainable products, innovative service and financing offerings and/or a strong brand and social license to operate (%)

The estimated percent revenue growth could be quite if your company is in the manufacturing, distribution, and retail sectors because these companies typically have higher environmental and social / labor footprints, they have opportunities to produce and sell green products, and they have products to lease and package with ongoing management, consulting, service and maintenance agreements. If your company in the service or financial sector, there may be fewer revenue growth opportunities. *This question is required.

5. Current annual expense for proposed project (%)

Total current costs for the item that you are targeting for your sustainability project. Do not include capital expenditure costs, if these apply to your project. *This question is required.

6. Capital expenditure (CAPEX) costs ($)

This could be one-time cost of retrofits, repairs, or implementing a new process or system related to your project:

7. Estimated percent savings (%)

The potential percentage reduction of the organization’s costs as a direct or indirect result of the project. *This question is required.

8. Ongoing expense increases ($)

Enter a dollar amount for items such as staff time for proposed project, maintenance costs, any additional expenses, if applicable. All should be annual figures.
