2018 Chicago LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment

Welcome

Welcome to the 2018 Chicago LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment!

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey and contribute to this vital community needs assessment project, funded by The LGBT Community Fund of The Chicago Community Trust.

What is the LGBT Community Fund?
The LGBT Community Fund serves as a tool to educate the region about LGBT issues and promote effective philanthropy to achieve strategic change. Founded in 2010, the Fund has awarded nearly $1 million during the past three years, over the course of three rounds of funding (learn more about round 1 here, round 2 here, and round 3 here).

What is the purpose of the survey?
There are two purposes of this needs assessment. First, the Steering Committee of The LGBT Community Fund seeks to better understand the key needs, challenges, strengths and assets of the local LGBTQ community in order to inform its next round of funding decisions. Second, the project also seeks to make a broader contribution to the Chicagoland LGBTQ community by making the data report available to the community at the conclusion of the project, both online and through community presentations.

Who should fill out the survey?
All individuals residing in the Chicago area who self-identify as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer) should fill out the survey.
  • Please note that we define "LGBTQ" inclusively. If you identify as a member of the LGBTQ community, but not necessarily with any of the terms listed above (e.g. if you identify as pansexual, genderqueer, intersex, etc.), you should still fill out the survey!
  • Please note that the Chicago area is defined as the tri-state Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), including Northwest Indiana and Southeast Wisconsin.
  • If you filled out a survey in 2011, thank you and welcome back! We would love for you to fill out a survey this time around, too.
How will my privacy be protected?
This survey is confidential. You will not be asked for your name at any time.

How long will it take?
This is an intentionally detailed survey, with approximately 50 questions. We estimate that it will take about 20-25 minutes to complete.

Why should I fill out the survey? What's the benefit?
There are not many surveys like this one: Chicago's last comprehensive LGBTQ community needs assessment was conducted in 2011 (and so much has changed since then!). Relatively little data exists about the local LGBTQ community, and as a result, LGBTQ populations continue to be underserved and under-resourced, making a survey like this extremely important. Responses to these surveys will directly inform the funding priorities of The LGBT Community Fund, which impacts services for the LGBTQ community throughout the region (between 2015-2017, the Fund has allocated nearly $1 million to local organizations).

The needs assessment report will be made available to the public, not just to funders, so everyone who participates in the survey will be contributing to literature that can be put to immediate use by local organizations and leaders.

Your participation is vital to this effort to capture a clear picture of the LGBTQ community. As a way of saying thank you, four survey-takers who choose to enter their email address at the conclusion of the survey will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 Visa gift card in appreciation for their efforts.

Who should I contact if I experience issues with the survey?
Please email jessica@mortengroup.com if you experience any accessibility challenges or encounter other issues taking the survey.

Thank you!
