Associate Continuing Healthcare Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard Survey

Apprenticeship Standard for Associate Continuing Healthcare Practitioner

Background: Apprenticeship Standards describe the high-level knowledge, skills and behaviours required to carry out a defined occupation. They are developed by employer led Trailblazer groups and are available for a range of different occupations from level 2 through to 8. Full details of apprenticeships commonly used in the health sector can be found on HASO.

Rationale for developing a standard for this occupation: The CHC workforce continues to face a number of challenges over the next few years – increased demand, recruitment and retention concerns with high numbers of vacancies across the country:

1. Supporting development of the NHS CHC workforce –Apprenticeships are seen and valued as high quality pathways to successful careers, providing opportunities for new and existing employees to develop and assist the local CHC team in meeting its current and future skills needs – supporting a “growing our own” workforce strategy for local teams; bridging the gap between the administrative functions, care assistants and registered clinical functions
2. Recouping levy contribution - All employers with a pay bill in excess of £3Million will be paying a 0.5% levy into HMRC. Organisations draw back down the funds to cover, or subsidise the cost of training their own apprentices.
3. Meeting the public sector apprenticeship target - From 31st March 2018, all public bodies with 250 or more staff in England are required to have at least 2.3% of their staff as new apprentices over the period of 1 April 2017 – 31 March 2021 and formally report to the Government how they are working towards this target.
Improve recruitment and retention - Research has shown that apprentices tend to be loyal to the organisations which invest in them, thus improving staff retention; less reliance on agency/bank staff.

Organisations involved in developing the apprenticeship standard:

  • NHS England
  • NHS Islington CCG
  • NHS Surrey Downs CCG
  • Midlands and Lancashire CSU
  • NHS Wirral CCG
  • NHS Northumberland CCG

Structure of the standard: Trailblazers must develop standards that comply with the criteria set out by the Institute for Apprenticeships in their 'How To' Guide.  The criteria mean that the standard must:

1. Be completed in line with their template
2. Describe an occupation which is defined and distinct (with minimum overlap with other apprenticeship standards)
3. Use high level descriptors rather than providing a detailed curriculum.

Please download a copy of the draft standard here before you start so that you can refer to it whilst you are completing the survey.

How long will it take to complete the survey?
It should take in the region of 20 to 25 minutes.

What is the deadline for responding to the online survey?
The deadline for the consultation is 12pm, 5th March 2019.

Thank you for taking part.
