2019 New Undergraduate Experience Peer Mentor Application


(Applications Due Friday, February 22nd, at 12pm)

Peer Mentors serve as role models for incoming first-year and transfer students, and are responsible for engaging and supporting new students in their departments after they arrive on campus. This includes participating in NYU Welcome Week activities, New Student Seminar, office hours for 1:1 appointments, and other departmental programs. Peer Mentors are responsible for co-facilitating a section of New Student Seminar with a departmental advisor or instructor in the fall. Candidates for this position must have excellent communication skills, desire to serve as a leader and role model, and ability to engage new students in a responsible and professional manner.

Required Responsibilities & Commitments:
Spring 2019:
  • Attend information session and meet application deadline
  • If offered: schedule, prepare for, and attend interview
  • If selected: complete Peer Mentor survey and all on-boarding materials
  • Attend Welcome Dinner

Summer 2019:
  • Attend and participate in week-long August training
  • Communicate with your New Student Seminar via e-mail
  • Support Steinhardt’s Welcome Week programming including the Deans Welcome and Department Sessions
  • Facilitate planned sessions and excursions for your department and New Student Seminar section during Welcome Week
  • Participate in NYU Steinhardt’s Day of Service

Fall 2019:
  • Co-facilitate New Student Seminar with a departmental advisor or instructor
  • Meet with your advisor/instructor to prepare for New Student Seminar and discuss student progress
  • Meet with New Undergraduate Leadership Team for goal-setting and mid-semester check in
  • Hold weekly office hours to support students in a 1:1 setting
  • Inform New Student Seminar regularly about campus events during class and via e-mail
  • Participate in additional projects as necessary

Successful Peer Mentors:
  • Serve as a leader and role model, both on campus and in the greater community
  • Facilitate engagement with new students through programming at NYU and in NYC
  • Provide 1:1 mentorship to new students
  • Share personal experiences and answer questions related to student life at NYU

Qualifications & Guidelines:
  1. You MUST be available for all required training dates and times.
  2. During the Fall semester you must be able to co-facilitate a section of New Student Seminar (class time discussed with department) and hold ~10-20 office hours during the course of the semester.
  3. You may be employed outside of this role as long as you can commit to the training and all required dates and times. Students employed in multiple roles at NYU cannot exceed 20 hours/week across all positions.
  4. You may register for summer classes as long as they do not conflict with required training dates and times.
  5. You are not eligible to apply if:
    1. You will be a Resident Assistant, Commuter Assistant, or Welcome Week Leader
    2. You have a graduation date of May 2019 or September 2019

Applying & Interviewing:
  • All new applicants are required to attend an information session.
  • Online applications (http://steinhardt.nyu.edu/orientation/leaders) and supporting documents (unofficial transcript and resume) must be submitted by 12pm on Friday, February 22nd.  No exceptions. 
  • Applicants must be full-time NYU Steinhardt undergraduate students.
  • One of your references must be your current academic advisor. You must contact them prior to providing their reference information.
  • Interviews will be held Thursday February 28th  – Friday March 8th.  You will receive an e-mail regarding scheduling the week of February 25th.
  • Late arrival or missed interviews will not be rescheduled.
  • Each interview will run for approximately 20 minutes and will be conducted by two staff members.
  • All students will be notified by email of the result of the interview process after Spring Break.
