About the Darebin Community Awards

Community Awards Nominations
You can nominate an individual or group for one of the seven categories of awards.

The 2019 Awards are made up of seven categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Leader of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year 
  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Emerging Community Leader of the Year
  • Community Group of the Year
  • Sustainability Award
  • Lifetime Achievement 

How to Nominate a person or group:

Nominations open on 1 May 2019 and close 4pm, 31 July 2019.

  1. Complete a separate survey for each nomination.
  2. Ensure you complete all sections of the nomination form and attach copies of any supporting information, e.g. previous awards won, newspaper or magazine articles, details of additional referees, etc.
  3. Submit your Nomination online, by post to City of Darebin, PO BOX 91 Preston, 3072. Or in person at any Darebin Customer Service Centres.

All nominees and nominators will be invited to the Darebin Community Awards Night which will be held on Friday, 23 August 2019 at Preston City Hall.

Eligibility Criteria By Award Category

Citizen of the Year
Presented to an individual over 21 years of age. The nominee must be an Australian Citizen, who either lives, works, volunteers or studies in the City of Darebin, and who has an made an outstanding contribution and shown exemplary leadership to the local community during the current year. 

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community Leader of the Year
Presented to an individual who symbolises the values important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and is an inspirational leader and a role model for others. The nominee will have made significant impact in the Darebin community, through professional or voluntary undertakings, over a number of years.

Young Citizen of the Year (under 25 years)
Presented to an individual up to 25 years of age. The nominee must be an Australian Citizen, who either lives, works, volunteers’ or studies in the City of Darebin, and who has made an outstanding contribution and shown exemplary leadership to the local community during the current year.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Emerging Young Community Leader of the Year (under 25 years)
Presented to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person up to the age of 25. The nominee will have made an outstanding contribution to their community and/or demonstrated excellence in their chosen field, and is regarded as an inspirational role model for other members of the community.

Community Group of the Year
A Community Group of four or more people who have performed a service to the community. This award targets voluntary groups with minimal funding – large funded organisations are excluded. The contribution can occur in the year prior to the award being presented or as recognition of a longstanding commitment/service to the community.

Sustainability Award
A sustainability champion who has, or is delivering a project/program/activity which delivers genuine and measurable action in response to an environmental issue relevant to Darebin, actively engages the local community, and whose project/program/activity complements Council’s environmental priorities.

Lifetime Achievement 
Presented to an individual to recognise outstanding leadership and commitment over a lifetime of achievements and service. This award celebrates longevity, legacy and impact on the community made over a number of years.
