GTP study 2

Information/Consent


Purpose
To understand the relation between involuntary phenomena associated with playing video games, and executive functions. This will be assessed via cognitive tasks and a questionnaire.

Who is responsible for the research project?
Dr Angelica B. Ortiz de Gortari at The Center for the Science of Learning & Technology (SLATE) at University of Bergen, Norway.

Who can participate in this study?

  • Between 18 and 50 years old.
  • Playing video games for at least 6 hours per week.
  • Being right-handed.
  • To participate you will be required to install a Web player in a PC or Mac powered by Inquisit (https://www.millisecond.com), software for psychological testing. We guarantee that it is free from virus

What do you need to do?
The participation involves 1) answering some questions, and 2) completing some tasks online.
To participate you will be required to install the Inquisit Web player. This software is provided by an official developer of online tasks and we guarantee that it is free from virus.


How long does it take to participate in the study?

The 1st part (Survey) takes approximately 15 minutes and the 2nd part (Tasks) approximately 15 minutes.

Your rights as a participant
  • Your participation is voluntary.
  • You have the right to leave the study at any time.
  • We will ask you to create a personal code or nickname that can be used to identify your data and remove it from the study, should you change your mind about consent and/or participation.

How will your data be used?
Your responses will be analysed as part of the full data rather than as individual responses. The information you provide will be used only for research purposes, and the results will be published in scientific papers, conferences, articles on the Internet and shared in the press or other media. All the data will be treated confidentially.

Personal data
  • The only personal data that can identify you collected in this study is your IP address, which will be NOT be traced back, and it will be saved only to allow you to return to complete the survey in case of accidental web browser shutdown and to avoid replication of responses.
  • Those part of the Prolific Academic program will be required to enter their Prolific ID to be able to receive compensation, however the survey responses are not collected in the Prolific system, therefore data is not paired.
  • The IP address and Prolific ID will be deleted as soon as the recruitment phase is concluded, and we ensure that there will be no replication of data responses. Your data will be completely anonymous.
  • Optionally, you can share your email address at the end of the survey only for the purpose of receiving information about results of the study and/or receiving invitation about participating in further studies about GTP.


Your rights regarding personal data
As long as you can be identified in the data material, you are entitled to:
- insight into which personal information is registered about you,
- getting personal information about you,
- delete your personal information
- get a copy of your personal data (data portability), and
- to send a complaint to the Data Protection Officer or the Data Inspectorate about the processing of your personal data.

What are the benefits of your participation?
You will contribute to the understanding of involuntary phenomena and how video games influence our everyday life.
If you are part of the Prolific program you will receive compensation.

What risks does your participation involve?
Your participation in this study does not involve any risk.
