Have your say on our Aboriginal Partnerships Plan

We are updating our Aboriginal Partnerships Plan, and would like to hear what you think.

To find out what this plan should include, we spoke to our local Aboriginal community, our Aboriginal Advisory Group and Yarra's Traditional Owners, the Wurundjeri. We also spoke with people who work in Aboriginal community organisations.

1. Relationships

We will support community connections, promote culture and protect important places. This will include:

Consulting the Wurundjeri people on all decisions affecting the Wurundjeri
Consulting the broader Aboriginal community on all issues affecting Aboriginal people.
Supporting organisations that are building positive relationships with the Aboriginal community.

2. A visible culture

The plan recognises that Aboriginal history and culture needs to be central to Australia’s national identity. We will make sure Aboriginal people, culture, issues and achievements are more visible, by:

Advocating for Yarra’s many important Aboriginal organisations, services, and urban meeting places and sites.
Helping the wider Yarra community learn about – and be part of – Aboriginal culture.
Promoting Aboriginal people, arts, events, significant days, culture, languages, achievements, issues and history.

3. Community health and wellbeing

We will work towards improving health and wellbeing for Aboriginal people in Yarra. This will include:

Supporting vulnerable Aboriginal community members.
Being an advocate for Aboriginal people.
Fighting racism.

4. Organisational Development

We will strengthen Yarra Council’s ability to better serve the Aboriginal community. We will do this through:

Creating more employment opportunities for Aboriginal people at Yarra City Council, and in the broader Yarra community.
Building cultural awareness with Yarra Council staff.
Being clear, transparent and accountable with the Aboriginal community.
