Maximizing EWIS and VOCAL data in a Cycle of Inquiry

8:30 AM - 1 PM
Are you interested in data usage that focuses on improving outcomes for all students? Have you heard about the Early Warning Indicator System (EWIS) or Views of Climate and Learning (VOCAL) Survey and would like to learn more?  Do you want to understand and use VOCAL data to support students’ academic success and social and emotional well-being? Have you wanted to  use available state data to improve post-secondary outcomes? The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is offering a daylong workshop dedicated understanding VOCAL and EWIS data and how to incorporate this information into your data inquiry habits.

For those new to these data, you’ll learn the basics: how the information can help you know your students better, how the different types of school climate data help you understand student perceptions of their learning environments, and how to use the EWIS reports in Edwin and VOCAL reports in the Security Portal. For those beyond the basics, you’ll learn strategies to cohesively use EWIS and VOCAL with other resources to get students on track for meeting K-12 and college success milestones.

Participants will have an opportunity to explore the various EWIS and VOCAL reports for their students and schools for the 2019-20 school year.

This workshop is open to all schools/districts and all grade levels. Consider coming as a district or school team of 3-6 people, including teachers, counselors, program specialists, data specialists and school and district leaders.
No prior EWIS or VOCAL use experience is necessary; users of all experience levels are encouraged to come.

What is EWIS?
EWIS systematically identifies students that may need additional attention in order to reach an upcoming academic milestone. Educators around the state use EWIS – along with local context, expertise and interventions – to help prepare students for success in school and beyond. For more information on EWIS, please go to

What is VOCAL?
The Views of Climate and Learning (VOCAL) is an annual student survey sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) that measures students' perceptions of three dimensions of school climate: engagement, safety, and environment.  Students in grade 4, grade 5, grade 8, and grade 10 participate in the VOCAL survey. VOCAL  reports provide a snapshot of how well schools and districts support positive learning environments that engender students’ academic success and social and emotional well-being. When combined with EWIS and other data, the VOCAL data can help inform any school improvement efforts.  For VOCAL go to

Further information will be available in Early September; here are a couple of items to get you started.
  • EWIS relies on using data from the prior school year to provide risk data as students enter the 2019-202 school year. Districts reporting these data after the due dates may not have EWIS reports in Edwin Analytics in time for the start of the school year.
  • VOCAL reports will be available within the security portal by the time of the meeting; please ensure your team has access to these reports for the meeting. A dummy report will be available for teams who do not have access to the security portal or for schools whose students did not participate in the survey.
  • Please plan to bring at least one laptop/tablet per every three members of your team.
