Civics Project Network

Civics Project Network

The MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education welcomes educators from across the state to join our 2019–2020 mathematics, literacy, science, digital learning and computer science, and history/social science educator networks. These networks are designed to support educators to advance teaching and learning across the Commonwealth. We are calling on classroom leaders, school leaders, and district leaders to join us and collaborate across districts to learn, to test and refine tools and strategies, and to innovate.

Civics Project Network

This Network will support planning and implementation of the civics projects occurring in grade 8 and high school. Beginning in 2019-20, schools will embark upon implementation of the 2018 History and Social Science Curriculum Framework and S2631, An act to promote and enhance civic engagement. The new Framework includes an increased emphasis on civics education with the addition of a grade 8 course in United States and Massachusetts Government and Civic Life and civics standards throughout PreK-12. In addition, the Framework includes seven Standards for History and Social Science Practice, which highlight the importance of developing students’ civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions.

Participants will engage with the Civics Project Guidebook, a forthcoming resource developed by the Department to synthesize useful information and resources for civics project design and implementation, aligned with the new Framework. Using the Guidebook, participants will (1) identify key components of the civics projects, (2) develop civics project(s) for pilot in spring 2020, (3) and plan for high quality instruction that facilitates engaged student learning related to the civics projects.
