Request for public comment on the FFRDC's final draft analysis report and the National Academies committee's review of this report on Supplemental Treatment of Low-Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation

A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s committee provides a review of the final draft analysis report by the federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) team. Section 3134 of the National Defense Authorization Act of FY2017 mandates the National Academies to perform a concurrent and parallel review of the FFRDC’s analysis of approaches for supplemental treatment of low-activity waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. In addition, Congress has tasked the National Academies committee with soliciting public comment from stakeholders and interested members of the public for the final review.

The National Academies will be accepting public comments through the on-line submission form below. Please keep remarks relevant to the National Academies committee’s review report and/or the FFRDC’s final draft report. Comments may address issues such as treatment technologies for the low-activity waste, disposal sites, cost, schedules, risks, or other topics relevant to the two reports. Submissions may also be sent via e-mail to Hanford@nas.edu or mail to:

Please note all information submitted to the National Academies committee will become part of the established public access file and will be available to the public upon request. Submissions may be quoted in whole or in part in the committee’s final review report with attribution.

After the meeting, the committee will review all comments received and will assess whether any comments result in the committee changing any findings and recommendations in the committee’s third review report. The final review and assessment will be published in a National Academies report anticipated for release in January 2020. The final FFRDC report is anticipated to be published in October 2019.

The public comment period will end at midnight on October 31, 2019.
