Reasons for Children’s Behaviors Study

Principal Investigator: Christie Petrenko

This form describes a research study that is being conducted by Christie Petrenko, Ph.D. from Mt. Hope Family Center, University of Rochester. The purpose of this study is to understand the various reasons for children’s behaviors and how parents think about them.

If you decide to take part in this study, you will be asked to complete a survey that will take about 30-35 minutes to complete. The survey will ask questions about common causes of children’s behavior and how much they apply to your child. There will also be questions about parenting strategies and your experience as a parent. A few questions about family background are included to understand how children’s behavior varies across families.

If you have more than one child between the ages of 3 and 16, please take the survey one time, thinking of one child. We are interested in reasons for all children’s behavior, but especially that of children with disabilities. Therefore, if you have a child with a disability between the age of 3 and 16, please take the survey with that child in mind. If you do not have a child with a disability, think of any child you wish. Please only take the survey one time.

You are welcome to forward the survey link to others who may be eligible and interested.

We estimate that approximately 5,000 subjects will take part in this study. Please only complete this survey one time.

Some of the survey questions could make you feel uncomfortable or bored. You can skip any of the questions you do not want to answer. This study is anonymous. All of the information we collect will be stored in a secure manner and only study team members will have access to it. There are no other expected risks. There are also no expected benefits.

The alternative to participating in this study is not to participate.

You will not be paid for participating in this study. There will be no cost to you to participate in this study.

The University of Rochester makes every effort to keep the information collected from you private. In order to do so, your responses will be kept strictly confidential. The survey is being hosted on a secure server. Only the study team will have access to the SurveyGizmo account where the data can be accessed. Once downloaded from that account, the data will be stored on password protected secure UR servers, with access restricted to study personnel. The data will also be stored on Box, which is a secure data storage. Data will be stored for future analyses and as a basis for alternate measure development.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You are free not to participate or to withdraw at any time, for whatever reason. No matter what decision you make, there will be no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
