Informed Consent

INFORMED CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH PROJECT:
“Small for Big: An Inclusive and In-Depth Computing Curriculum to help Non-Majors Learn Small Patterns to Solve Big Problems”

This form asks for your agreement to participate in a research project on attitudes about computer science. Your participation involves taking an anonymous, online survey, and it is expected that it will take approximately 25 minutes or less. There are no risks anticipated with your participation. Future students of computer science may benefit from your participation. If you are interested in participating, please review the following information:

The purpose of the study is to examine how students in computer science perceive their belonging and interest in the field, their orientation toward the topic, and their attitudes about others. Potential benefits associated with the study include better understanding how students view themselves and others in computer science to better meet student needs.

If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete a 15-25 minute survey, which will ask you questions about how you think you fit in computer science, your interest and motivation for computing, your attitudes about others, and your long-term career interests.

Please be aware that you are not required to participate in this research, refusal to participate will not involve any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled, and you may discontinue your participation at any time. You may omit responses to any questions you choose not to answer. There are no risks anticipated with your participation in this study, as your survey responses will be collected anonymously.

This research is being conducted by Dr. Jane Lehr in the Department of Ethnic Studies at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and Dr. Emily Coyle in the Department of Psychology, Saint Martin’s University, Lacey, WA.
