Students of Color Summit 2020: POC Utopia(s)

SOCS 2020 Workshop Application

CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS!

Welcome to the workshop proposal application for the Multicultural Center's 4th Annual Students of Color Summit (SOCS) 2020: POC Utopia(s): Dreams for Hope! Please fill this out and submit this by Monday April 6th, 2020 at 11:59 PM to have your workshop be considered for the 2020 conference.

Everyone interested in facilitating a workshop or leading a discussion is encouraged to apply! Please note: if you are staff and/or faculty member, we ask that you work with a student(s) on developing and facilitating your workshop.

The year’s theme is POC Utopia(s): Dreams for Hope. We will explore the concept of dreams and hope, looking specifically at who has been granted access to it and who has been excluded from it. In this conference, we will situate dreams and hope as instruments of empowerment. Adrienne Maree Brown argues liberated utopias are only capable of being envisioned when our “imagination is unshackled”. It is for this purpose to unshackle our imagination that we have created pathways to provide an opportunity to explore in-depth the specific barriers to dreaming as faced by various communities (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American and Southwest Asian and North African (APIDA/SWANA) pathway; Latinx and Indigenous pathway; Black/African American pathway; and Working Towards Solidarity pathway). The pathways will serve as spaces to address intracommunal issues of the past and present in order to collectively dream a liberated future.

Workshops will take place on Saturday, May 16th, 2020 in a 70-minute time slot between 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Applicants can submit as many proposals as they would like and each workshop can pertain to multiple pathways.

Should you have any questions or would like to make any changes to any previously submitted application, please contact us directly at socs@calpoly.edu!

We look forward to reading your application! Lastly, please forward this application to anyone you know who may be interested in facilitating a workshop.
