2020 Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy Data Companion Survey

Instructions

This survey is meant to provide the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education with a clearer picture of how the Seal of Biliteracy is being implemented across the Commonwealth. This survey does not replace the official SIMS reporting for the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy. Rather, this supplements the official SIMS report to provide greater clarity to enable the Department to support this program more effectively. This survey is only for districts who participated in the Seal of Biliteracy in 2019-2020, and it should be completed only once per district by the person or persons with the most knowledge of the Seal of Biliteracy's implementation (usually the EL director or World Languages director).  To expedite this survey, we recommend you have the following information on hand:

  • List of languages taught in your district.
  • Type of English Learner Education programs offered in your district (TWI, TBE, SEI, etc.)
  • World Language assessments used for Seal of Biliteracy (including portfolios)
  • For each student who took a qualifying World Language assessment for the State Seal of Biliteracy in 2019-2020 (including 2019 AP and IB exams):
    • Grade in school (9-12)
    • Which World Language assessment they attempted
    • Which language they assessed
    • Whether they qualified for the Seal, the Seal with Distinction, or nothing
    • Whether they learned this language at school or in their home/community
