You have received this reference form because a colleague or associate has provided your name as a reference for them to be considered for an appointment to the Washington State Dyslexia Advisory Council. Please find below the scope of work and expectations for members of the Washington State Dyslexia Advisory Council.
The purpose of the Washington State Dyslexia Advisory Council(RCW 28A.300) and (E2SSB 6162)
The superintendent of public instruction shall convene a dyslexia advisory council to advise the superintendent on matters relating to dyslexia in an academic setting. The council must include interested stakeholders including, but not limited to, literacy and dyslexia experts, special education experts, primary school teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, representatives of school boards, and representatives of nonprofit organizations with expertise in dyslexia. Members of the council must serve without compensation.
By January 15, 2022, the council must review school district implementation of screenings and their use of multi-tiered systems of support to provide interventions as required under section 2 of this act, and report to the superintendent of public instruction with updates on its recommendations for the best practices and sample educational information required under subsection (3) of this section.
Additional Expectations of the Washington State Dyslexia Advisory Council
If chosen for an appointment on the Washington State Dyslexia Advisory Council, you will be expected to:
- Support a deeper understanding of Dyslexia.
- Develop and refine resources for Washington families, community members, educators, administrators, and school districts.
- Attend meetings either via Zoom platform or in person. The location for the meetings will be the Olympia or SeaTac regions.
- Timely respond to emails and meet deadlines as identified within the council meetings.
- Spend time beyond the council meetings supporting the outcomes of the Dyslexia Advisory Council.
- If applicable, guarantee support from your supervisor/administrator to participate in the Dyslexia Advisory Council.
Appointments to the Council will be for two years with an option to renew the appointment for another two years.

Please note, online meetings will be scheduled after the first in-person Council meeting.
If the council is able to meet in person during the 2020-21 school year, all travel, meal per-diems (based on WA State Office of Financial Management guidelines), and applicable substitute costs to attend the in-person meetings will be reimbursed by OSPI. If applicable, clock hours will be provided.
