Agenda

Week One: (Oct. 12) So now you’re the academic dean!
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    Facilitate a smooth transition into the role of academic dean
2.    Participants can articulate the unique opportunities and challenges of being a dean at a theological school
3.    To begin to build a community of new deans who can support one another in this work
4.    Participants will learn the resources ATS provides for insights, encouragement, and support for deans

Synchronous session #1 (Friday, Oct. 16, 11 a.m. to noon ET)

Week Two: (Oct. 19) The academic dean and the faculty
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    To explore the distinctive character of the dean/faculty relationship in a theological school so that new deans can be successful in leading the faculty
2.    To understand faculty in ATS schools as a background for their schools' faculties
3.    To learn about, become familiar with resources for developing the faculty

Week Three: (Oct. 26) The academic dean and the CEO
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    To increase the effectiveness of this most important relationship
2.    To clarify within each new dean's school the particular roles of the CEO and CAO within the context of the larger community of schools

Week Four: (Nov. 2) The academic dean and other institutional relationships
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    To develop greater understanding and effectiveness in the relationships of the academic dean and other key administrators
2.    To provide resources that will be of benefit for deans across the variety of institutional forms and roles

Synchronous session #2 (Friday, Nov. 6, 11 a.m. to noon ET)

Week Five: (Nov. 9) Financial management for academic deans
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    To become more effective in the financial management required by your role
2.    To strengthen the working relationship between the academic dean and the chief financial officer

Week Six: (Nov. 16) Governance and the academic dean
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    To learn the nuances of shared governance in a theological school
2.    To understand and function effectively within the particular governance structure of their school

Week Seven: (Nov. 30) The vocation of academic leadership
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    To think together about the academic deanship as a vocation
2.    To contribute to longer, more effective service by academic deans

Synchronous session #3 (Friday, Dec. 4, 11 a.m. to noon ET)

Week Eight: (Dec. 7) The academic dean and students
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    To reflect on and become more effective in the academic dean's roles with students

Week Nine: (Dec. 14) Wrap up and looking forward
Asynchronous module goals:
1.    Re-connection for everyone in the course
2.    Reflections on the course
3.    Planning for future interactions; how to stay connected with the larger community of deans

Synchronous session #4 (Friday, Dec. 18, 11 a.m. to noon ET)
