Tips for Doing an Effective Survey
Follow these great suggestions when creating and distributing any survey:
Keep your questions short and straight to the point. Your respondents are less likely to complete a survey when it’s long or shifts from one topic to another.
Avoid writing leading questions. Some phrases or words may push respondents towards the direction of a particular answer. This bias can undermine the quality of the survey results. When doing checks for questions, keep an eye out for adverbs and adjectives that can make a statement appear biased. Take them out if they’re unnecessary.
Pose one question at a time. Questions with conjunctions, such as “and” and “or,” indicate that the statements contain two parts. You can avoid a double-barreled question by being on the lookout for these conjunctions and rephrasing the statement when necessary.
Pre-test your survey before launching it. Having a few people go through your survey first will help you uncover any phrasing errors and reveal unclear or vague statements that require revision.
