Questionnaire - Szentendre Bike-share

In the recent years, bike-sharing became the fastest growing mobility option across the globe. Even though it is not yet widespread in Hungary, shared bikes are already accessible in Budapest, Szeged, Esztergom and Hévíz. The City of Szentendre is now exploring the feasibility of implementing a bike-share system. While we are still in the exploratory phase, we would like to hear from you!
The questionnaire takes approximately 5 minutes.

What is bike sharing?

The name is not misleading: The shared bikes are used by several members of the community – residents, commuters, visitors, tourists - on an "as-needed" basis without the costs and responsibilities of bicycle ownership. Bike-sharing systems comprise short-term urban bicycle rental schemes that enable bicycles to be picked up at a self-serve bicycle station and returned to any other bicycle station. If the public bike stations cover strategic locations (such as the HÉV station, residential areas, Dunakorzo or the Skanzen Open Air Museum) it would be an ideal transit option for point-to-point trips in the city that are not within walking distance.
Other bike-sharing systems operate from one large, intermodal node (such as the HÉV station) and users check out and return bikes from this location. With such system, longer-term rentals up to a day are possible, and users can store the bikes at their home or workplace before the return trip.
Bike-share systems are usually accessed through a low-cost subscription ranging from one-day access to annual membership, allowing subscribers to make as many trips as often as they like without additional charges, provided they return the bicycles within a predefined time period. With the use of electric bikes, even the Pilis foothills would be easy to climb!

What benefits does it bring to Szentendre?

Public bikes offer an effective, alternative way of transport for trips that might otherwise have been made by car, reducing the negative impacts of car use, such as congestion and emissions. The goal of a bike-sharing scheme is to increase the accessibility of public transport hubs and support thousands of commuters on a daily basis to reach their final destination quickly. But bike sharing would be good for more than commuters. Szentendre has outstanding tourist attractions and a bike-sharing system would give tourists a fun way to tour the city and its environs.
By offering an easy way into cycling and removing common barriers, bike-sharing attracts new riders. A broader bicycle user base not only triggers the "safety in numbers" effect and improves public safety, but also encourages cycling infrastructure development that benefits the community at large.

What's the next step?

The mobility experts of the Regional Environmental Center (REC) prepare a feasibility study to analyze whether there is potential in a Szentendre Bike-share, and if so, what would be the optimal solution for the community. Please share your ideas and comments!
